Understanding the quantization process when importing a MIDI file

I'm using musescore for importing generated MIDI files. The quantization default value is set to 1/16 and the max value is set to 1/8. I would like however to fully understand the quantization process.

This is what I think to know until now. Every note can have a different quantization value, with a maximum value equal to max value. But I struggle when the note length is lower than the max value. Which quantization value is then used? From the documentation I guess it is adaptive, so the default value is never used? So when I have a 1/32 note, will the quantization value also be 1/32?
