Syllabic melismas

• Jul 21, 2013 - 23:28

When writing lyrics right now into a score, the default for a two or more syllable word is to separate the syllables with a dash, as in: e-rat. However, when working with lots of music setting this word, I'm finding numerous instances where there are long melismas on an initial syllable, in this instance, an e-rat where the "e" syllable takes five or six measures of music.

Currently, MuseScore 1.3 will only include a single dash for the entire word, which means that six measures of "e" get notated very sparingly. For an example, look at the fourth page of the attached pdf file, in the bass line in measures 231-235, a score created in MuseScore 1.3.

It would be more in line with professional standards, as well as easier to read, if the program were able to include multiple dashes across these longer settings of words. For example, something like the alto part in measures 11 and 12 in this score:

Some forum commentators have advised using underscores for long melismas. However, this is not an option for non-final syllables, as they need to connect to the next note. Standard practice for right now is evenly spaced dashes.

There is currently a work-around of physically typing a dash as a syllable under a particular note, but it would be smoother to build even spacing in the functionality.
