Setting certain note properties at the top of the Piano Roll Editor

• Sep 10, 2021 - 17:54

This pertains to setting note velocity (type and value), play duration ("Len"), and play start time ("OnTime") with the controls in the control bar at the top of the Piano Roll Editor (PRE) (toward its right end).

(As an aside, I note that many users have never seen these controls, since with the PRE window at its default width, they may not be visible.)

If we have the PRE open and select a note symbol on the score, the corresponding "time bar" in the PRE graphic window "lights up". Or if we select the "time bar" for a note, the corresponding note symbol on the score "lights up". This seems to suggest that the "selectedness" of a note can be conferred from either view.

But if we aspire to observe or set one of the note properties I mention above with the controls in the control bar at the top of the PRE, we must select the note by selecting its "time bar" in the PRE graphic window. (That looks just the same as if we had selected the symbol on the score, but clearly isn't the same.)

Like many of the "odd-seeming" features of MuseScore, this is not debilitating to the user who has discovered how this works.

So this is just a "tip".

By the way, if we aspire to see or change one of those note properties in the "graphics"panel" of the PRE, whether with the numerical controls to the left or by manipulation of a "value indicator", that limitation does not occur. We can select the target note(s) either on the score or in the PRE graphics panel.

Best regards,

Doug
