Korean spam attack aftermath

• Sep 25, 2015 - 14:17

Regular visitors of musescore.org will have noticed that for the past week, our site was under attack by Korean spam. The spam originally came from South Korea, but while fighting back via IP blacklisting, the spam started to come in via - compromised - servers from all over the world.

With the help of lasconic, I managed to sort of contain the problem now. All in all, we've together spent several days on this issue. Somehow this is depressing as all of this sucked time and energy away from what we love to do which is working on MuseScore.

Then again, I like to look at it from the bright side. This attack is a testimony that MuseScore is becoming a really popular destination on the web. Popular enough for spammers to consider writing dedicated spambots for it. Milestone unlocked. That said, this is just the start and it will happen again. But we'll be better prepared now to take on the next spam wave.

Until then!
