AppImages work on most Linux distributions and they are portable - i.e. they can be used without being installed and without root (sudo) privileges. Simply download the correct one for your processor's architecture (what's this?), give it execute permission, and then run it! See the Install on Linux page for more details about how to use the AppImages.

Intel/AMD architectures: ARM architectures:
i686 (32-bit) - old computers
x86_64 (64-bit) - modern computers
armhf (new 32-bit) - phones, tablets, rPi 2/3

MuseScore's AppImages come straight from the developers, so they are always the latest version.

Distribution packages (sometimes out-of-date)

Many distributions release a package of MuseScore with each new version of the distribution. However, with the exception of rolling distributions like Arch Linux, MuseScore releases rarely coincide with a distribution release so these packages are often out-of-date.

  • Ubuntu: Search for "musescore" in the Ubuntu Software Center.
  • Mint: Search for "musescore" in Software Manager.
  • Arch Linux: The musescore package is always the most recent release version of Musescore. Just run "pacman -Sy musescore" as root to install and then keep up-to-date with "pacman -Syu".
  • Debian: The package "musescore" can be installed from the main repository using your favorite package manager. A more up-to-date package is often available in the "unstable" (sid) distribution, as well as in the backports.
  • Fedora: Check your package manager or run "yum install mscore" as root.
  • Mageia: Download the correct RPM package using Mageia Control Center.
  • PCLinuxOS: Available in the PCLinuxOS repositories.
  • Gentoo: Available in Portage. Just run "emerge musescore".

Community packages (usually up-to-date)

The MuseScore community may provide a more up-to-date MuseScore package for your distribution:

  • Ubuntu and derivatives (e.g. Mint): Add the mscore-stable Ubuntu PPA. (Instructions on that page.)
  • Arch Linux User Repository: Install the latest git checkout of Musescore alongside the release version following directions on the Arch Linux Wiki.
  • Debian: Check the "unstable" (sid) distribution, or you could try manually installing DEBs from the Ubuntu PPA.
  • openSUSE: The latest RPM packages for openSUSE can be downloaded from the multimedia:musescore2 repository of the Open BuildService. The easiest way is to use the 1-Click Install (click "Show unstable packages").

  • OpenBSD: You can install MuseScore from packages: pkg_add musescore or ports: audio/mscore
  • FreeBSD: You can install MuseScore from the ports collection: audio/musescore
  • DragonFly BSD: You can install MuseScore from the ports collection: audio/musescore

All older portable Versions of MuseScore for Windows are available for download from as well.

Download 1.2 for 10.6+ 32-bit Core Duo
Download 1.1 for 10.4+ Universal

Unsupported versions of Windows

  • 32bit version without SSE2: The supported releases of MuseScore 2.0 require a processor supporting SSE2 or it will crash on startup. If your processor doesn't support SSE2, you can try this build.
  • 64bit version: There are only two known reasons why you would want to run this unsupported 64bit build: Because you want to use a huge SFZ or because your MIDI keyboard driver doesn't support 32bit.

Nightly versions

Nightly versions are produced from the code of MuseScore that is being developed. They are intended for testers and advanced users who want to experiment with new features, or need access to the latest bug fixes and are willing to risk the instability of an unfinished product. A file saved from a nightly build may not open in a future nightly or any released version. Use at your own risk. Please report any bugs you find. See also comparison of stable, prerelease, and nightly builds .
