Playback errors with Musescore 2.1 and GeneralUser GS soundfont

• May 24, 2017 - 21:08

Ever since I downloaded the newest Musescore update, several instruments that I've assigned GeneralUser sounds to have suddenly begun to play back very differently. Some have a completely different timbre, others have annoying audio pops on certain notes. I know the new update is supposed to work better with other soundfonts, so just to be sure, I installed the newest version of the GeneralUser soundfont, and the issues remained. Then, when I tried to save the audio as an MP3, it was very quiet and the pops remained. Is there any way to solve this problem, or if not, revert to the previous version of Musescore?

Pops on some instrument (bass synth, maybe a few others) are a known issue. If you are seeing other problems, please attach your score and describe the specific problem in more detail so we can investigate.

The quiet MP3 would be due to normalization - the loud pops are throwing off the process.

That makes sense. But I've been using these sounds for over a year and they've never popped before, and that doesn't explain the changes in timbre either. I have a youtube video of the original audio and I'm trying to upload the new audio, but the website is not letting me send the score to Youtube. I received an error message from the Musescore application saying that the audio could not be uploaded.

Yes, the popping is a known issue in 2.1 only, with only a very few sounds, so a good workaround is to simply choose other sounds. But in order to understand the other issues you are having, we'd need you to attach the actual score here (use "File attachments" right below where you type your reply) - not a YouTube video.

Here's the original audio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXYz2bjdjTk
The first two voices, which are played by the GeneralUser GS Saw Lead are much more staccato and very bright compared to the original. Then the fourth and fifth voices, played by GeneralUser GS Square Lead sound more percussive. In the drumset line, too, which is played by Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra's standard drumset, there's a loud, sporadic whiplike sound.

If this hasn't been fixed yet, then I'll throw in my example of the problem.

I think the pops are dependent on where playback begins.

I have a WIP of a college fight song I'm making digital, and when I started using the GeneralUser sound font I immediately stumbled upon the exact instrument it was happening to in my score. However, although it happens in the exact same place each time I start playback from the beginning of the score, if i then start playback... say, on the third measure, then the pops happen somewhere else and not where it was originally was happening.

I've uploaded only the part in which it happens: Mellophone. Pops do not seem dependent on the rest of the score.

Playback 1: Start at the beginning.
Playback 2: Start on measure 3.

I get random pops on my scores also. I don't have any instruments that have pops reported but I haven't narrowed down where the pops are coming from.
