Playback doesn't work

Unlike some people who have the problem of their playback working with no sound, my playback won't work at all! The playback button is greyed out. Pressing spacebar does nothing, and the play panel doesn't even show up even when it is checked. Help?

Also, for some reason, the Synthesizer is greyed out, too. I can't open up the Synthesizer panel.
