Appending bars at the end of a score

Hi - I can't remember ever having had this problem before with older versions of Musescore.
When I append bars I get don't get x number of bars added to the end, I just get one bar with the number od bars written above it, ie that number of bars rest. If I knew how to split these, it wouldn't be such a problem.
Is this a known bug, a feature that has changed, or is it just my configuration that is making it go squirrelly?
