Adding my own text
The text option appear to be entirely prescripted. Is it possible to insert a text box wherever I want on my score and add my own text? For example, I want to indicate Parts of a score using the letters A, B and C above the staff at the start of each Part. It isn't at all clear how to do that or if it's even possible.

You mean like rehearsal marks? Refer to the online manual:
https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/rehearsal-marks
Aside from those, there are many other types of text objects, all of which have behaviour specific to their purpose. Again, the manual will help you.

Thank you for your reply Al. Yes, I spent quite a bit of time with the handbook and experimenting. The rehearsal mark looks like it will do what I need. Thank you.
Do you mean rehearsal marks? Select the first note/rest of the section and press ^M.
The shortcut for a basic text box is ^T. You can choose from a variety of preset styles in the "Staff Text" section of the inspector panel, or make your own adjustments in the bottom right.

Thank you for your reply Rose. I tried the rehearsal mark using Command M and that meets my needs. Thank you for taking the time to reply.
