Move your soundfont down in the list of soundfonts, so a GM-compatible one (such as MuseScore_General) is on top of the list.
Or use the Mixer to reassign all sounds.
This did fix it, but it only reverted back to the default sound. Is there any way all the instruments could play together with the new soundfont? thanks
Use the mixer to assign the specific sound from your soundfont to the instrument that needs it.
Entries in the mixer are listed in soundfont order; so first all those from MuseScore_General, then the entries from your custom soundfont.
