Some questions about MuseScore 4

• Dec 19, 2022 - 16:20

Hey, so I haven't really used MuseScore since MuseScore 2. I've been a Dorico user for a while and decided to try it out again after Tantacrul's MS4 video. However, I've noticed there's not a whole lot of tutorials on actually making an orchestral piece from scratch to see what the creators are doing to get such great mock ups using Muse Sounds (unless there are and I've just not seen them?), but I seem to be coming across a few problems using both the Muse Sounds piano (the soft piano) and the Muse Sound String library (particularly the solo cello).

I seem to be getting lag with the cello no more how high I put the Buffer size in Edit/Preferences/I/O. I've noticed that both the cello and piano randomly accent notes while for the piano, I'm noticing that my melody notes are sounding lower than my left hand accompaniment (LH: arpeggios outlining harmony; right hand, melody notes). However, I can't seem to find a way to edit velocities of the notes to fix this issue. Are there actually any ways to edit velocities and midi cc parameters? I am confused otherwise how MuseScore 4 is realising this if it isn't midi, which I was a bit confused by in Tantacrul's video. If there isn't ways to edit these parameters, will there be in the future?

I am also curious to know, how is legato being handled in stringed instruments? Are the notes overlapping, like in other VST libraries such as, say, Cinematic Studio Strings? Is there a way to fix the lack of legato in the strings, or the delay in the playback? Or do I really have to tell the software to "arco" and do slurs, or does it automatically assume legato otherwise in playback if not specified in the notation?

There's not a lot details about the new playback engine and its format available yet in a structured way (but it is said the specification for it will be made public). Internally no MIDI is used (so also no CC) but MusePlaybackEvents (its also not a VST). 4.0.0 is the very first version to use it and the current implementation has just left infancy.

Yes, there will be a lot more playback controls added in future updates.

Ah right. Well in this case, yes, there definitely needs to be far more playback controls. As things stand, there are a lot of issues with how the legato phrasing works with the cellos, and it gets far worse the quieter the dynamic. There is a lot of random accenting of notes, and it's a shame there's no way to tweak these issues at the note by note level where they occur. I'll probably stick with Dorico and using NotePerformer until these issues are fixed and more is done with Muse Sounds, I'm excited for whenever that is.
