In conversations in Italian forum this "smile" is called sinaléfe (from the greek συναλοιφή = melt together) but I'm not sure that it matches to elision.
Its symbol is ^ and unites two vowels. There is around a specialist?

I think 'elision' is indeed something different, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elision:
Elision is the omission of one or more sounds.
