Instrument font and bracket

• Apr 23, 2011 - 23:40

I have a score that looks like example2, attached. It looks like that because I kept changing my mind about what I wanted as I developed it.

Now I want it to look like example1 instead: with the usual font for the instrument name, and a bracket for the bottom two staves.

I believe similar problems have been reported, but it's not clear to me if the reported ones are exactly the same as what I'm appending, or if there is a workaround.

Is there any way to fix this, or do I have to create the whole score again?

Thanks for any advice.

In example2:

  1. Right click on staff 1 -> Staff properties -> Change instrument -> Pick voice -> OK -> OK. Font problem should be solved
  2. Go to Create -> Instrument and select the first staff of Harp and press Add below -> OK
  3. Change the clef to F clef by drag and dropping from the clef palette
  4. Copy paste the last staff in this new staff. Maybe take a look to lines or text to be sure you miss nothing
  5. Go to create instrument and delete the last Harp part
  6. Double click the braket and use the handle to make it span the two staves
  7. Right click on staff 2 Staff properties -> Change instrument -> Pick Harp -> OK -> OK.

Thanks very much. Your suggestions work fine.

But by experiment I found an alternative way to solve the second problem, which is kludgey but avoids having to recopy the whole staff. You can highlight and delete the lower brace. Then click on the remaining brace to highlight it and drag it to cover both staves. Then go to Style/Edit Text Style, change the Subtitle font to Times New Roman 12, Apply OK, then Create Text Subtitle (this method assumes you don't have a subtitle already), create a subtitle saying Harp (or whatever), and then click and drag it to the point of the brace. This will give you Harp in the same font as Brace, and will put Harp at the point of the brace. There are probably other ways to do it too.

That's a nice solution but the instrument name will be lost for MusicXML export for example. Subtitle should be used for subtitle :) Copy pasting a full staff is quite easy, select the first note, go to the end, hold shift, and click on the last note. Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V.
