Tempo markings gone invisible

• Aug 5, 2011 - 19:00

Hello
I’ve seen a recent post about “Invisible tempos”. Here’s my story on the same subject:
The attached score is a part of the original. When I was writing measure 2, I had put tempo markings over Re#, Mi, Fa# (flute notes), in order to create the gradual rallentando effect and fermata that you can hear by playing the music. Little by little, as time went by, these markings began to disappear from the screen and, as you can see, they are now completely missing from the score, yet the rallentando effect is still being produced.
After months that I’ve been working on a large piece of music, this problem has now spread in almost all of my score, giving me a really hard time to make any desired tempo changes, since I have no way of seeing the original tempo numbers and change them accordingly.
On the other hand, there are times when tempo markings are not lost but can be found hanging around in other pages, very far from their original place. Clicking on them, the dotted line can show me where they were originally put, and I drug them in their former place, only to find them tomorrow moved again in some other new place... Frustrating, isn’t it?

And there’s more:
When I save my score in pdf, you can see that in the upper left part of the page there appears a “Andante = 80” which is missing from the mscz file. This is exactly what I’m talking about !!! Months ago, I had put this tempo marking in the beginning of the score. After a while it disappeared from the score, but it keeps showing (off-place) when I “save as” .pdf. And there’s no way to get rid of it in my pdf files.
I guess I’ve made myself clear. Can you give me any instructions on how to preserve things from disappearing or moving off-place ? Lasconic and Sabatella, you’ve been of great help in the past. Can you propose sth this time?

By the way, referring to the recent post “Invisible tempo”, what does it mean to “open a file with a text editor and see the list of tempos in a score”? Is it sth we all can do? If so, how is it done?

Thank you very much.
(I’ve been using MS 0.9.6.3 and 1.0 on Windows XP Home and Windows 7 Home Premium)

The only way is to catch the problem when it appears and give steps to reproduce the problem so it can be fixed. We can't be of any help if we don't have precise information and that's very frustrating too :)

A text editor is a software to edit text files. Popular ones on Windows are PdPad or Notepad++. If you save your score in MSCX format, you can open the file with a text editor. If you know how the file is structured you can edit it manually. If you don't know you can't destroy the score, so use this only on a copy of your work.

Again, tempo moving around and disappearing should not open and you shouldn't have to deal with a text editor. If you find a way to reproduce it post it but please use a the most recent version of MuseScore and try to stick with it. For example, I know at least one bug in 1.0, solved in 1.1 that can cause invisible tempo changes with inserting measures. (http://musescore.org/en/node/11649)
