Hanging midi notes on playback.

• Sep 24, 2011 - 13:26

Not every time, but sometimes on stopping playback part way through, a note hangs and continues to play continuously. Some other programs have a midi panic button to stop the note when a stick up like this happens, any chance one can be incorporated in the next version, or is there a cure I haven't yet found?

Which version of MuseScore are you using? On which platform? Do you encounter with any score? Or just some score, maybe imported from MIDI ?

Sorry, should have given more info, it is MuseScore version 1.1 running on Windows7 64bit. It does seem to happen more on imported files, and recently as in today with a file from MuseScore created by Grevious and this piece linked to here=

http://musescore.com/score/25813

it also happened with another from that list, but I forget which one now.

It can be a nuisance as I tend to work with jazzing up or changing and experimenting with already created files for my own fun, rather than starting from fresh with my own stuff. It means I have to close the program, therefore losing anything I have done, to stop the continuing note or notes. Hence why I asked for a panic button.

Are you using MuseScore's default SoundFont?
Another one you have added to MuseScore?
Or routing MuseScore's Output to an external MIDI device??

The classic reason for this happening is that you hit stop in the middle of a long note and before the Note Off event is sent to the Synth.

It would help if MuseScore sent a universal Note Off message when Stop is pressed - can't remember the syntax for this - will have to dig around in my MIDI implementation files - assuming it doesn't already do so.

Hi, considering I am new to MuseScore I am as yet using all defaults and just the computer and its own sound, not even a sound card. I can understand what you say about hitting the stop before the note off event. It has so far done this with both the created in MuseScore files which are presented by others in the MuseScore Connect panel, and also in other midi files I have imported from other sources, and before I have even tried to add or change anything.
In all other respects I find MuseScore brilliant, I do have older versions of Finale (2006) and also Sibelius 4. However they are still installed on my older Windows XP computer, they can stay there. MuseScore in most respects is so close to them and has to me the best of both that I will be sticking with MuseScore.

I have it happening with MuseScore 1.1 (on WinXP 32 bit and on Win7 64bit) from time to time but so far I can't easily reproduce this. However here are events that seem to trigger it:

  • When playing back, switching between opened scores.
  • When playing back I added a bracket onto the 1st bar of a system. As a result I had one note that would play without stopping.

I've had similar issues, especially with imported MIDI files.

I saw a very useful tip here, which is to right-click a note and then "select all similar" which should select all of the notes in the score. Then right-click again and go to "Note properties". Make sure the right-side column reads Auto, 0, Auto, 0, and that the bottom three on the left are 0, Auto, 80. I think these are the default values.

That will clear up any scrambled properties that crept in. Obviously, if you have deliberately set any specific note properties this will clear them.
