Cannot recognize MIDI input and crashes Creative E-MU 0404 USB

• Mar 14, 2012 - 22:08

Hey folks - thanks for any advice you can offer. I can't MIDI input to work properly. In preferences, there are no selectable options for the PortMidi device.

I am using:
Creative E-MU 0404 USB (USB interface that has MIDI in/out)
Yamaha DGX-500
Windows 7 64-bit
MuseScore v. 1.2 rev. 5470

I have searched the forums and haven't found a solution. I do see the recurring suggestion to try pmdefaults, which does not recognize my device. Default Input only registers [MMSystem] - sorry, I don't know enough about this to understand if that's helpful or not.

About crashing it, the E-MU 0404 USB interface has its own software that it comes with. MuseScore makes it really go nuts. The software stops registering any sort of device (I just took a screencap, also shows pmdefaults) as well as a sample rate or input status. Very bizzare.

The right combination of rebooting has gotten it to recognize the E-MU 0404! Partial success. Still, nothing happens when I hit a note on the keyboard in the note entry (I do have note entry mode selected and all), any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yup, sure have, sadly. Would be nice if the fix were that simple! I also have followed the setup instructions from MuseScore support ... so the MIDI input is enabled and all that simple jazz. Thanks for the tip though!

As a side-note, I do use this midi setup successfully in Reaper, Maschine, and Kontact.

I got it going ... I didn't do much of anything different, but some combination of rebooting, reinstalling and resetting made the difference. I notice that the interface likes a hard reset before using midi (power the 0404 USB down, turn the keyboard on, turn the 0404 USB back on). MuseScore still does odd things to the software side of the interface, but if everything works, that's fine. I'll just reboot the computer when I'm done writing, not the worst thing by any stretch.

Hopefully this helps someone else, and thanks a million to ChurchOrganist for taking the time to troubleshoot with me!
