Triangle Wave
I am aware that there is no triangle wave synthesizer in General Midi, and hence not in musescore by default. I was wondering which instrument or synthesizer that is in by default has a sound closest to a triangle wave.

Try Celeste, Xylophone, or Vibraphone - they come closest to a pure triangle wave.
They are all percussive, obviously, so you may not be happy with the envelopes,
Unfortunately there are not many samples that truly sound like vintage simple synth tones. If you really desire these you will probably have to look for alternative soundfonts, or start building your own.
