No sound from MuseScore/unexpected side effect
First, it's somewhat fixed, but there were some unexpected results along the way.
I opened MuseScore after being away for a few weeks, and got no sound from it (it was fine before). I confirmed that other musical sources (WAV & MP3 on Windows Media Player, iTunes, and YouTube videos) play as expected. I also tried a number of different MuseScore scores.
I then tried MuseScore portable (from an existing download to a USB stick), and found that it also has no sound!
I reviewed the normal settings in both the installed & portable versions (Mixer, Synthesizer & Play Panel) and didn't see anything amiss.
With only the portable version open, I selected Revert to Factory Settings. I did it with just the portable version, because I didn't want to lose my customized settings.
However, the Revert had no affect on the portable version, but it did dump my customized settings in the as-installed version (sigh). But at least the sound was restored.
**I would assume that this, in and of itself, is a bug.
**How would one, in this case, do a factory reset of the portable version? It still has no sound.
Also- a number of my customizations (such as palettes) are saved, but it's not clear to me how to restore them.
For future use, is there a way to create a single point in the program that can save all customizations? Short of that, is there a single place that lists all the different ways that customizations can be saved & regenerated after a factory reset?
Thanks,

Be patient, it will come an answer to the others questions.
Meanwhile, if you have not already seen: https://musescore.org/en/node/96811
Have you tried uninstalling the soundfont, and then reinstall it? (To avoid revert to factory settings)

From this handbook page:
https://musescore.org/en/handbook/revert-factory-settings
Here are where the Windows customizations reside...
...For advanced users, the main preference file is located at:
•Windows Vista or later: C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\MuseScore\MuseScore2.ini
•Windows XP or earlier: C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\MuseScore\MuseScore2.ini
The other preferences (palette, session...) are in:
•Windows Vista or later: C:\Users\\AppData\Local\MuseScore\MuseScore2\
•Windows XP or earlier: C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\MuseScore\MuseScore2\
So, you can save a duplicate somewhere, but if either of those files caused the problem, and you revert to factory settings, you may have the problem again if you restore that (saved) bad file after the factory revert.
Regarding palettes: if you have customized palettes, be sure you are not using the 'Basic' workspace.
See the image here:
https://musescore.org/en/handbook/palette#workspaces
which shows how to enable any custom workspaces/palettes.
