Corrupted Musescore file

• Oct 26, 2012 - 20:20

Cannot open the attached Musescore file. I usually keep extra copies but I have only worked on it once for a few hours and had not backed it up yet. Composed on one PC, saved to USB flash drive, tried to open on another PC. Same versions of MuseScore. Went to open and "Reading file failed: no such file or directory". Musescore closed normally when it was created. I suspect disk corruption as CHKDSK reports errors.. Looks like the fist 15%of the file got overwritten, as the PK headers are missing and there is a long string of repeating data. Cannot open the file in an archive program to see the MSCX file inside. Trailing archive data is still at the end of the file. If I could get a chunk back even that would help. Maybe a zip repair program? Anyplace to look for "relic" backups on original PC?

Help!

The file is not complete, so there is no chance to get something from it.
On the original PC, you can look for a file starting by a dot and ending by a comma in the same directory where the original file was saved. If nothing, you can make a copy of all the mscz files in C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\MusE\ and try to get yours. The session file in the same directory is a txt file and can give you hints.

USB drive problem, I suspect.

"Composed on one PC, saved to USB flash drive". I'm not necessarily saying you were at fault in this case but just a reminder to all that it's best to eject a USB drive before physically removing it; Mac and Linux users are used to this but Windows seems to make it harder for you (and then punishes the user, of course, when it goes wrong).
