I need help with my Transcription and Arrangement - Trombone Part too high

• Oct 30, 2012 - 03:16

I recently got done lifting a song from a recording, only to find that the 1st and 2nd Trombone part was written dismally too high (even though I transcribed the song to be in the same key and tessotura as played). I wish to have the piece be playable without a professional-level band.

I first thought of a simple solution, just transpose the score down a third or fifth. BUT, Then the Bari and 4th Trombone bottom out.

Alright, So I'll just keep the key, and drop the Solo Trombone and Solo Tenor parts down one octave. BUT, Then the Tenors bottom out.

Okay, Now Ill just drop the Trombone parts, but not the Tenor parts. SORRY ruined the tone, as the Trombone and Tenors should play in unison.

Any Suggestions?

Suggestion 1 - as often when encountering a problem with a specific instrument - is to ask a trombone player. They'll probably tell you that they don't like the key - Db - and don't like all those high notes so you will be asked to consider dropping everything by a semitone and then dropping by an octave the very high parts.

If you really want to keep the high parts high, well then a trombone is a big trumpet (originally) so have the trumpets play the high parts in unison with the tenors.

I transposed down, swapped some of the parts in measures 4,5,6 then dropped the trombone parts out of the stratosphere.
