Help inserting notes

Hello, first post. I'm making something for a class that I'm in, and I've come across a problem. I've been trying to add a note after a couple of beats in a measure. There are two whole notes (F and A) that begin the measure, but around beat 3, I'm trying to add a half-note (D). How do I do this?
