Thank you. To be more precise, select the rehearsal number and hit delete. If you select the frame (which is what I was doing) nothing happens.

Indeed I discovered that nothing happens after highlighting the item and just hitting delete, or command + delete, or command + fn + delete. I can edit the marker to contain no characters, but I'd like to delete the marker box itself.

If you are only able to delete the letter and not the box, that means you have double clicked the mark and are in text mode. SINGLE click the mark to select it and then delete. Then the whole mark is deleted.
