Newbie - How to count musical notes

First, I do apologize if this request has been previously posted. I couldn't find it so I decided to post my question.

I am very new to music. I'm having a hard time understanding how to count the various notes. Is it possible to add a update/plugin to the software that will count the notes as you create the music. Under each measure the proper count for the notes in the measure above (ie, 1-2-3-4, 2-2-3-4, 3-2-3-4, etc). Or is there music software already out there that does this?

This is an usual way to count a tune in, in a Jazz situation.

If I understand your question, you want to understand how notes are divided into different durations, and how they fit in a bar as to being counted. You will need to understand Durations: http://cnx.org/content/m10945/latest/
