playback of half note plus eighth note

• Jun 10, 2013 - 22:25

I want to enter a half note tied to an eighth note, same pitch (2 and a half beats). I have done it by entering a half note, then an eighth note, then a tie. The playback plays it as two separate notes. How do I get the program to play it as one note, 2 1/2 beats? thank you

I suspect you placed a slur rather than a tie.

For a tie between the notes, go to the first note and use "+".

For a slur you use the "s".

...is to type 6 (the duration of a half-note), then the note (e.g. 'c') then 4 (the duration of an eighth-note) then '+'. Thus:

6
c
4
+

It gets a bit more complicated when you have chords but, for instance, using D and F:

6
d
[Shift]-f
4
+
[Shift]-d

..then you need to click on the first D and press '+'.

Another way of doing tied chords (common in piano music) is to enter the chords untied to begin with and then select all the notes of both chords and press '+'. You can quickly tie a couple of quite complex (but common) chords such as C, E, G, Bb:

6
c
[Shift]-e
[Shift]-g
[Shift]-b
down-arrow (to flatten the B, if it's not already flat in the Key Signature)
4
b
down-arrow
[Shift]-g
[Shift]-e
[Shift]-c (the notes for the second chord are entered in reverse order to avoid MuseScore continuing to climb upwards in pitch)

Now click on the top note in the first chord and [Shift]-click on the bottom note in the second chord and press '+' and the respective notes will be tied. You will, additionally, need to alter the direction (concave-up or concave-down) of the ties using 'x' to make everything spot-on.
