Dot placement, dotted notes

Is there a way to adjust the dot position of dotted notes? In lilypond, I can say “dots up” (dots appear above the staff line) and “dots down” (dots appear beneath the staff line). Without this functionality, dots sometimes get overprinted when there are two or more voices on a staff with tight voicing. The only way to deal with this is to move one of the offending notes so all the dots can be seen, but the result is awkward and unprofessional.
