Interpreting Duke Ellington

• Jul 15, 2013 - 23:51

Hi,

I'm new to MuseScore. If anyone would answer these questions I'd be very grateful, but there's no urgency.

Is it possible to hear a glissando or legato effect in playback for any instrument? Is it possible to pan an instrument left/right for only a few measures at a time? Excuse my ignorance but I'm unable to come to a conclusion from the information in the handbook and the demo videos I've seen.

Also, can anyone recommend a textbook with which I can study big band arrangement in stylistic and historical detail? I have a basic knowledge of voice leading principles and can read all instruments, but I'm strictly an amateur hobbyist with no interest in a music career and no formal education. I intend to remain that way.

Anyway, here's my quick-and-dirty arrangement of "Sophisticated Lady" by Duke Ellington. It's not meant to be viewed or printed; I only want to share the sounds with you. I prefer to hear it with the GeneralUser GS 1.44 soundfont by S. Christian Collins.

Thanks for your time.

Legato, you could fake it by manipulating Note onset and offset. Right click a note -> Note properties. Glissando no. Pan effect for the full score in Display -> Mixer. For just a few measures, no. If you really need these features, you might want to take a look to a sequencer, not a score writer.
