Translating Tablature to chord

• Oct 4, 2013 - 06:27

Can Musescore translate guitar tablature to chords? For example, I have tab for G7 at 3fr. That tells me where my fingers go and on what strings. I worked out that the notes are G D F B D G. I'm learning here. I can read music, but I'm learning the fretboard. Is there a web site or book where the hundreds of guitar tabs are translated into chords? Thanks for helping.

Michael,

I followed your suggestion and I found hundreds of sites that give the chords for songs in tab form. I learned along the way that what I apparently what is to translate guitar tab into piano notes. Tuxguitar looked like one such, however it would not load on my Mac OS X 10.6.8. I can read music in piano notation. I'm trying to see guitar tabs in piano notation so I can make sense of what I'm playing. If you have additional suggestions, I'll be glad to have them. Thanks for trying to help.

As you have probably discovered, the fretboard can be viewed both horizontally (i.e. across strings) and vertically (i.e. up/down the frets). Given this setup, unisons are possible - that is to say the G7 chord you mention as having G D F 'B' D G at the third fret would use a different 'B' were it played as an open chord on 1 fr -- that is, the open 'B' string would be used in this case.

Important tip:
The 'nut' (what the strings pass over on their way to the tuning mechanism) can be regarded as an 'invisible' finger barring all the (open) strings.
Viewed this way, all 'open chords' are really 'bar chords'....

See example in the attachment.

Regards.
