Students composing with MuseScore

• Dec 21, 2013 - 23:13

I teach music in a high school/gymnasium/liceo in Finland. Here's a task I gave to my students. I gave them a poem by a Swedish poet. I had written a score with the lyrics. But instead of a melody, I just wrote a bunch of 8th notes to mark the rhythm of the lyrics. All of them were the tone A. So I kind of decided how the rhythm of the poem should be handled in the composition. Then I let them adjust each note to actually make melodies for the song. They started to drag the 8th notes upwards and downwards, while listening to the result meanwhile, trying to sing with the playback.

Attached is a melody that one of the students created. Our next task was to find chords for the melody. But I have so far no clever tool for that, so I kind of demonstrated how I would choose chords for the tune. So the chord marks written in the scores are my analysis. I didn't want to put the lyrics in the attached file because a) they are in Swedish anyhow and b) we don't have a permission from the poet.

Click here to listen to the result, played 3 times through, because the original poem had 3 verses.

I know the OP is not recent, but I just found it now. I hear a lot of tension in the first measure. Does this reflect the lyrics?

I think this was a neat assignment. Thank you for sharing it.

This is such a great project for helping students to explore composing and using notation software. What a great idea! Thank you for sharing.
