Triplets

• May 26, 2014 - 22:08

I have a song (time is 3:2 time) which starts with a pickup bar of 1:2.
The soprano starts with 3 crochet triplets which I can add using the Ctrl/3 option and then adding the 3 notes. (File voice1.mscz)
The Alto voice also start with 3 crochet triplets. I highlight the same bar press N to enter the music click on "2" for the second voice, again use Ctrl/3 option but when I enter the notes, it now gives me a triplet of 3 quavers covering the space of 2 of the crochet triplets.(File voice2.mscz) which is not what I need.

What am I doing wrong? Any clues?

When entering triplets you really should enter the total interval duration and then the number of units to split that interval into. In this case you got three crotchets by accident and not by design as MuseScore selected the whole measure as the first interval but then - on entering in the 2nd Voice - it reverted to its "smart" thinking and assumed that you'd want the next interval to be a crotchet and it split that into three. Explicitly enter your triplet by typing 6 [Ctrl] 3. So, it's not what you DID wrong but what you didn't do. Unless you set an interval for a note, MuseScore just uses a default setting which seems to be the whole measure to start off with before you have entered any notes and then it seem to use crotchets.
