Difficulty with piano score

Trying to input a standard piano score on two staves. But I want the notes within both staves to incorporate different rythyms. For example a top melody line in crotchets with a lower accompaniment in minims. My present software only allows second notes on either stave if the time values are identical. I can use a bit of tying, but it looks awful and confusing.
