Last measure too wide

I have a score where the last measure is so wide it fills the staff with just that measure from left margin to right margin:

That last measure does not respond to trying to shorten it with the braces key, and no matter how much I adjust the previous measures with the braces key, that last measure insists on remaining wide. This not only looks unattractive, but it also means the rit. system text I want to put at the end won't spread over the last measure (the dots just run off the margin.) Is there any way I can shorten the last measure, or at least make the dots run over it?
