Deleting staff text

I have copied 32 measures and pasted them at the end to form a reprise. I need to modify some parts of the reprise. The first step is to delete the staff text that was only pertinent at the beginning of the song. Right clicking the text element selects it, but deleting letters only creates a mess of over-laid letters. I have tried ever thing I can think of. What must I do?
