Opensource Professional Level drill software

What are everyone's thoughts on this? programmers, drill writers, or people with a general interest. Would something like this be possible? I know there is a website Micromachining, but that is far from a program to actually write drill. I've dabbled in programming and can read and understand what is happening, but I'm far from effectively writing something with an actual interface (Aside from a command prompt can say, "hello world" in different languages based on a number input :P) I am starting to beef up my skills again though and learning more on java. Thank you for any input positive or negative, and I'd be excited to join and develop an open source drill writing program for communities to use as a hobby or perhaps professionally.
