headphones, apple TV, Display no sound

I'm on 2.3 and an older Macbook. I have never been able to get musescore in this or other versions to play audio though the following:

USB headphones
Apple TV
Display-HDMI in wall speakers

I have used the I/O settings, tried restarting, etc and still the sound only comes out of my laptop speakers.

Playback is working, just not in headphones or outside the laptop speakers. The first link wasn't relevant to my issue. Nothing in the known incompatibilities listed matches my issue.

I've tried starting MuseScore after everything is on and it still doesn't play through USB headphones, AppleTV or Display (lightning) cable.
