I cannot find a way to make it tell you what note letter it is when you click a note.
I am a beginner to sheet music and cannot yet read notes without then written above the notes. It would be very helpful if there was a way to, when you click on a note, for it to tell you what letter the note is. If there already is a feature like this could you please tell me how to use it?

At the very bottom of the MuseScore screen you can view the 'Status Bar'.
If it's not visible...
Use menu item: View and check the box next to 'Status Bar' - this gives info. about items that are selected (clicked on).
Clicking a note will display its letter name, among other things like the measure it's in, the duration, etc..
There is also a pre-installed Note Names plugin which produces output like this:

This will change the notehead scheme, which may be even more useful to you and it does not require installing plugins.
