Crackles heard in playback using MacBook

I can’t enter notes or use playback without hearing crackles/interference. Any advice please?

I have had this problem intermittently, and have gone so far as to replace the MacBook (Pro) with a new one and keeping up with the latest operating systems (I always used the latest MS). This is, as far as I can tell, an unsolved problem, but later MacOS and more memory definitely seemed to help.
Here's a possibility to check:
Use menu item: View -> Synthesizer and, during playback, make sure that 'Vol.' is not redlining.
