Phantom extra beats.

Had a pdf transferred to MS. Now editing, a few bars have a phantom rest in it, some have a + sign above it. Some are grayed out, now I'm finding some in the bar itself in black.
How do I get rid of these? I've tried clearing out the bar & re-entering all the proper notes, but they'll still be there & get included on playback. I'm not sure they print as of yet, but would simply like to know how to rid myself of these pests.
