two second pause for the new instruments
Is it normal for the music playback to hesitate while the instrumentation changes? I had to change the alto to another system and the playback stops for a second or two before it continues with the new voice.

Not when an instrument changes, but if you for example added a section break; then that has by default indeed a pause set to a couple of seconds.
Select the section break and use the inspector to change the duration of the pause.
