Sound works with MuseScore 2 but not MuseScore 3

• Oct 8, 2020 - 23:23

Hi,

Before I describe my problem, let me be clear. I have looked at this link: https://musescore.org/en/node/96811
I have done every possible thing mentioned in that link, and yet, I cannot get MuseScore 3 to recognize any input or output. I can't even access the synthesizer. I can't do anything regarding the production of sound in MuseScore 3 and I am frustrated. All of the above seems not to be an issue at all with MuseScore 2. I have a laptop and a desktop, and this is the case for both computers.

Has ANYONE figured out a solution to this problem that doesn't involve the aforementioned link? I have seen several forum posts like mind (play button grayed out, etc) and all I see for responses is updating sound devices and all that mess. Please, I need a hero. And please don't tell me to just use MuseScore 2.

Attached is one of the more comical unresolved posts regarding this issue:

So, I did something I'd never done before for some reason. I ran MuseScore 3 as administrator. It looked promising, because the play button became un-greyed and I/O in preferences actually had options. However, when I pressed play, my Bluetooth noise canceling headphones disconnected and reconnected, and the audio started coming out of my monitor's speakers. From that, I suppose I have deduced that the problem for me lies in my usage of Bluetooth headphones. I see that there are a number of threads for this specific issue. I have not yet seen a solution, but I also just started reading threads.

Hi, none of that worked. At least, I failed at following those instructions.

Anyway, I figured out something that worked for me:

1.) Go to the .exe file, right click; go to the "Shortcut" tab, click "Advanced", and tick "Run as administrator" (press OK)

2.) Go to the "Compatibility" tab; click "Run compatibility troubleshooter"; click "Try recommended settings"; click "Test the program..."

3.) I noticed that when I pressed play, the sound was coming from my monitor again. In the "I/O" tab in "Preferences", my Bluetooth headset what nowhere to be found. I decided to click on "Stereo Mix (Realtek(R) Audio)", because why not? I pressed play, and it was now coming through my Bluetooth headset.

I have no idea if all of these steps were necessary, but some combination of the steps worked. Might be helpful for those still having issues.
