Syntax Check for Repeats
The image below is just an example but it illustrates my query.
Is this type of repeat structure valid musical syntax? The main part of the score repeats but within that there are measures to be played first time round only and other measures to be played second time round only. Can I lay it out as shown, (with multiple separated [1] and [2] measures), or do all the [ 1 ] measures have to be contiguous and all the [ 2 ] measures contiguous?

No.
Here is an explanation of how repeats work. https://yourcreativeaura.com/sheet-music-notation/#30-navigation-and-re…. (Never mind the videos - the text and examples give a clear and simple overview.)

Thanks. That clears that one up.
"Volta brackets gives a repeated section a secondary ending. The first ending is labelled with 1. and the second ending is labelled with 2."
Is it "valid"? No
Will it "work"? MuseScore in the given example will play back what you intend. But be aware that there are no guarantees given towards other variations or future compatibility on this non-standard usage of a volta.

Thanks for confirming. MS does indeed play it back as intended but I'd never seen such a use in guitar tab books so I thought I'd check.
