Note Duration
Hi there,
I have a situation where I want a note to extend 1/8 longer than a whole note. It seems to me it should be possible but I'm a relative newbie at writing scores. I couldn't find an answer to this in the handbook which is not surprising as it is a hard question to formulate. Please have a look at my screen shot for further clarification. It shows where I want the note to finish and basically eliminate an 1/8 note rest. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Make that tied quarter note a dotted one?

That would be equivalent to a Whole note plus a 1/4 note vs. a 1/8 note. I don't have room.

No it wouldn't.
What you have currently notated is: dotted 1/2 + 1/4 followed by a 1/8th rest
dotted 1/2 = 3/4, thus leading to 3/4 + 1/4 + the 1/8th rest
making that last 1/4th a dotted one would then result in: dotted 1/2 + dotted 1/4 or 3/4 + 3/8 or as 6/8 + 3/8 or thus as 8/8 + 1/8 or thus a whole + 1/8.
But if you find dotted notation too hard to follow, then change that rest into a note and tie into it from the previous note. Same duration, equivalent notation.

Oh, I see. I guess I didn't understand how dots work. So when you add a dot to a 1/2 note it extends it a 1/4 beat and if you add a dot to a 1/4 note it extends it a 1/8. See, I told you I was a newbie.
thanks very much, jeetee!

A dot adds half of the notated main note duration to it.
