Guitar Tabulature with standard music notation

I was entering whole note chords in tabulature but when I changed to quarter notes I was only able to enter 2 beats in the measure. I wanted to enter 2 quarter note chords and 1 half note chord in that measure but it would not let me do that. Help, please. Thanks.
