Need information

Piano music, in 4/4 time, if you have a whole notes in the treble and also in the bass clefts, and you want to have a series of 1/8 notes running simultaneously with the whole notes, how can I notate that without being forced into the next measure?
I have to say, that other than this one thing, It really is a great program!! (no, I'm not sucking up!)
