Split staff and back again organ score

• Oct 25, 2022 - 19:06

I like to use MuseScore to transcribe organ parts so that I can program my midi organs at my churches and play pieces that are beyond my capability. One organ is an Allen and the other is a Rodgers.

It’s also a great way to automate the organ playback so I can play along with other instruments. The features I would love to see change in the new MuseScore release is the ability to actually split the manuals and return them back again in n the same part. In other words if I’m halfway through a piece of music that I’m transcribing and it requires that an added staff should be split in one of the parts, I need that ability and also to be able to unsplit. If you want to see an example of what I’m talking about check out the adagio and Mendelson‘s second Senada and you’ll know what I’m talking about.

I set up my Organ scores as three instruments. I will utilize three organs and then just delete the unneeded staffs from each part and combine them together so I have three mini channels. Each mini channel corresponds with whatever I am using for manuals. so I use the swell for the top staff, the great for the middle staff, and the base staff for the pedals. And then each one is assigned a different mini channel.

It works fantastic. Since neither of my organs that I play have a choir rank and requires a choir staff I just use swell great and pedal. But if I have request in a score from a composer like Mendelssohn he suggests using a choir rank if available, it’s helpful to be able to split the great into two different Staffs, then back again.

Currently when you split the staff or an instrument it does it for the entire score from the very beginning to the end. This is a problem. I’ll be at it’s a rarity and Ollie probably is impacted by organist but this would be an awesome teacher if you can figure out how to make it work. Thanks for taking the time to look into this you can email me anytime if you have any other questions or you can even give me a telephone call just shoot me an email and I’ll forward my number to you.

Comments

  1. Add the staff normally (for the entire score).
  2. Enter your notes in the correct place
  3. Open the staff/part-properties and set "hide when empty" to "Always" for that staff
