Printing a score

• Nov 3, 2022 - 14:51

Please see file below. I need to print this file on 8 1/2 X 11 standard typing paper. I know it will be miniaturized, but I did it before for my entire opera. This file worked OK until page 5, then cellos and basses got cut off on the bottom. (Did not print). How to i fix please. Thank you.

Look at Format>Page Settings

Your paper size is set to 2000mm wide (!!) x 279.4 mm long landscape. Surely if you want to print on 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper, that is the paper size you would want to choose. Having got the paper size right you can then adjust the staff space scaling (on that same dialogue) to get everything to fit on the page.

  • Switch to Page View instead of Continious View.
  • Choose Letter/Ansi A paper size (Format / Page Settings).
  • Reduce the staff space in this case to about 0.045 inch (about 1.15mm) in the same menue.
  • Look for dynamic texts and crescendo/diminuendo haipins in several places. They can be shortened a bit or moved slightly to a close position. Also some articulations have an abnormal place in your score and should be checked. Because then the score might be a bit narrower vertically and you can now slightly increase the staff spacing again until the most filled page fits.

An other option is to choose a larger page size (I usually use A4 and then go to A3) when writing a score. Export the PDF with this larger size. When printing to paper, my PDF viewer allows to set 'fit to printer margins' to shrink it back to A4.
See the attached file. I have not changed articulations, hairpins and dynamic text so as not to make a mistake in your score.
