Using custom soundfonts - preset numbering MS4

• Dec 16, 2022 - 14:51

The MIDI Program Change value is hard-connected to instrument name and is fixed in General Midi Norm. When using custom SF2 soundfonts which are not GM (i.e. organ or harpsichord stops or my own small sampled flute soundfonts) it is necessary to choose Piano for number PC 1 trumpet for PC 60 etc. (there is no numbering either) and then manually edit the part name and abbreviation to correspond with sound.
Choosing sounds should be independent on part name and should support Program change numbers (and Bank MSB and LSB). Thus SF2 soundfont features could be used well.

If your soundfont contains only one sound, that one will be used.
If you need to select a separate patch; the functionality to do that directly from the mixer is still missing in MS4 and will be reintroduced in a later update. In the meantime you could use the Sforzando or Sfizz VST3s to load your soundfont and choose a patch in them.

Thank you very much for your reply and work. I can see I am too impatient. I work on linux PC and it is still impossible to load VST3 plugins here - so even Sfizz is yet impossible to use (albeit it is Linux native VST3 sfizz.so format). So I shall wait for Jack and midi port, channel, program change and bank select support and ability to set path to instrument plugins.
In fact everything I need works just fine in MS3. I teach computer notation and combine Musescore, Sibelius and Finale with small exercises in Lilypond/Frescobaldi and Inkscape.
Musescore`s ability to work with user created soundfonts (SFZ format is very strong in that) with direct microtonal support and low-latency driver for rehearsing the ideas - all combined in one piece of software - crossplatform! - THIS is the main advantage and Musescore is great in that.
