A related and possibly causal issue is that 2 measures duration has magically changes ftom 4/4 to 13/8? they will not change back without losing all the content. What causes a measure to decide to change its duration??

Are you using MuseScore 3 or the recently launched MUseScore 4.0?
Perhaps you are inserting notes (which adds to the measure duration)?
