Need solution for not being able to select items in different layers

I've been trying to figure out the new mechanism for Ctrl-Click which allows you to click through multiple overlapping voices, and also other items which appear to be under the polygon covering an item like a beamed set of notes. A common problem is being unable to access expression text because it's "under" a massive region containing a beamed set of notes crossing staves. It requires some virtuosic flipping and reflipping of elements to get at the desired item(s). If you're trying to fix articulations like staccato dots etc that have been overlaid on another voice, then you need to pour yourself a stiff drink.

Related: you can't access certain items like images in frames (for repositioning, resizing etc) unless you manually change the z-order layering.

This wasn't addressed before release, and any workarounds should be documented in the handbook rather having everyone trying to figure out the terminology to search on in the forums and/or Github.
