Pasting from a single stave to a grand stave problem

I need some help please.
I have received a single line of music with the request to add some harmony to it on a grand staff. My issue is as you will see in the screenshots.. I am unable to copy the melody line that I received into a grand staff.
a simple copy and paste into the grand staff doesn't seem to work.
is there a way to do this? or is there a way to convert the single line of music into a grand staff? I have tried the instruments (I) panel but there is only the individual voices that can be added. Is there a way to add only a Bass stave to this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, these image do not tell use why the copy is not working. Copy should work just fine.
However, it will be much easier to add the bass stave. Open the instruments panel, select the existing (treble) staff. At the top in the dialog there is now a button enabled to add a staff. Click the button and you get a bass staff included.

Note the screenshots in the manual do not match the latest v3 (buttons are place at the top instead of in the middle section of the window).
