Why is the default for following DS always yield the second repeat, and skip the first?
When constructing a song in MuseScore 4, if a repeat section is designated with a first and second ending, why does MuseScore not repeat the first ending if desired?

Because AABA is a traditional and very common structure. Musescore does play the first ending and repeat if you enable repeats on DC in the DC properties. That gives you an AABAA structure. Something has to be the default and Musescore reasonably has the most common usage as its default.
